I’m going to be honest with you, friend, in the world of wellness, I like to think of myself as Robin Hood.
Particularly, the Disney cartoon Robin Hood, equally suave and whimsical, pants optional (oodelally, ooodelally).
But instead of stealing back the overly-taxed poor’s livelihood from the bloated wealth of Prince John the Phony King of England, I am going to reclaim phrases and concepts that seem to only be thrown around in the gweepiest of circles.
Gweepy, a word here which means self-indulgent gatekeeping capitalist nonsense.
There are a lot of predatory voices in the world of wellness. They seem harmless, even idiotic, like Prince John the PKE sucking his thumb in his crown and nightie, yet just like Prince John, PKE, somehow they have their hands deep into so many of our pockets as we are just trying to survive.
They are hard to miss, though. They cry natural remedies! and traditional practices! on their perfectly curated digital feeds. They shun allopathic medicine because they are able to pay for outlandish naturopath fees out of pocket, and you should too, because it’s an investment. They have a sponsor deal with a questionable supplement brand, often some form of colostrum. They are always talking about healing your gut.
And herein lies the problem. They will overplay phrases like ‘heal your gut’ to the point that the words become meaningless, and the next time we hear the phrase ‘gut health’, we will rightfully keep moving to avoid one less interaction with a crazy.
Worst of all, to me, they insist that their method is the only way you can heal, or just feel fucking good, when they just don’t know you or the variables at play in your life. They will say that they cured all their problems (namely: acne, and bloating) with some modality or another (red light therapy, blowing air up their ass, a real fucking irony that is lost on so many), overlooking that their stressors were acute and their resources plentiful.
I want to take wellness back, friend. It’s been awhile, and I’ve been working on some things, but for my next few posts, we’re going to dive deep into the concepts that have been co-opted by the world of wellness influencers, and reclaim them for real life.
Coming soon: ‘gut health’ and ‘gut-brain axis’, ‘mind-body connection’, ‘intuitive eating’, and more.
